It's not the "Giving Tree", it's the "Poke You in the Eye Tree". Some tree's are like that, best to keep clear. I hope it doesn't eat kites too.

For those who were wondering: in the game Minecraft you can grow trees instantaneously by using bonemeal on a sapling. It's particularly impressive with the new jungle trees that can be over 100 feet tall, but if you're standing on the sapling when it happens you get imbedded in the tree and the branches can smash through windows and wooden walls. So, yeah when I saw this comic I instantly thought of Minecraft too.
