Actually, they picked the name velociraptor because it sounded cooler than deinonychus. But technically, the anatomy of the predators in the movie matches that of the deinonychus. Velociraptors are smaller.

@Jeremy – I thought it was that Crichton just didn’t like the name “Deinonychus” and wanted it to be a raptor? Utahraptor was discovered shortly afterwards and he said he would’ve used that if it had been known about at the time. That’s what I heard anyway :3
I’d be a Pyroraptor, ’cause… ’cause I already am one! ^_^
And Pterodactyls aren’t dinosaurs. My opinion of Jordan has gone down.

The dinosaurs that were called velociraptors in Jurassic Park weren’t entirely made up, it’s just that neither Michael Chrichton nor Steven Speilberg knew the difference between a velociraptor and a deinonychus.
